Donnie Van Zant (born
June 11,
1952 in
Jacksonville, Florida) is an
American rock vocalist/
guitarist. He is the younger brother of the late
Lynyrd Skynyrd founder and singer
Ronnie Van Zant, and the older brother of
Southern rock and present
Lynyrd Skynyrd singer
Johnny Van Zant.
Van Zant formed
.38 Special in
1975, and is one of the
lead singers. The band, which started as a
Southern rock band and switched to a more straight-ahead rock sound, had several hit singles between
1981 and
1991.
In 2005, Donnie had issues with blood clots and has to take medication as a result.
As of 2006, Van Zant performs with .38 Special and with younger brother Johnny as
Van Zant.
Donnie also performed with Lynyrd Skynyrd on the
Hank Williams Jr. edition of
CMT Giants
